The Greenlink runs a fortnightly Health Walk programme. Every second Wednesday, we take people for a one hour walk. You don't have to be super fit to take part as these walks are designed to cater for individual abilities. It's also a great way to meet new people and find out about other walking groups in the North Lanarkshire area.
We have recently introduced a half hour walk. this is for people who are trying to build up their fitness and who may feel that an hours walk is too much.
Once a year, the Greenlink carries out free health checks prior to a health walk. You can have your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked in a community centre near the Greenlink. We also provide a free shiatsu massage and a healthy snack.
In the summer, we have a ' Big Walk ', from the Aqutech in Motherwell to Strathclyde Country Park. We stop for lunch at the Park and then continue the walk in the afternoon to Chatelherault Country Park. Anyone who doesn't fancy the whole walk can join in after lunch for the Chatelherault section. In January, we also have a Big Walk, to lose some of those Christmas calories. Here we usually walk from the Aquatech down to Strathclyde Park.
If you are coming for the first time, it is apppreciated if you can turn up 15 minutes before the walk is due to start. This is so that we can register you.
For dates and times of the walks, the 'Big Walk' and annual health checks, please see the Greenlink diary. All these events are free but you do have to book for the health checks.
You do not need to wear full hillwalking gear, just a pair of non slippy shoes, confortable clothes and of course some protection from the weather.
Leading a health walk isn't just about taking a group of people along the Greenlink. A good health Walk Leader likes talking to people and is caring enough to try and ensure everbody is having a good time, as well as keeping them safe. If that sounds like you, why not get in touch. We provide training in Leading and Health and Safety and you wont be thrown in at the deep end, we make sure you are confident in yourself first before you lead your first walk.
On the rare occassion that we have to cancel a walk, usually due to snow and ice, we do our best to try and contact everyone first. If the weather is bad and you are unsure if a walk is taking place please check the Dairy page on our website after 9 am on the day of the walk.
